The park is a favorite resort, and attracts visitors from considerable distances.”

The white sulfur water, which shot up to 12 feet high from a central fountain, was purported to have healing benefits. Local business leaders, seeing the abundance of individuals who came in to take the waters, set about capitalizing on the tourists. The White Sulphur Hotel was erected in 1892, providing lodgings and arranging entertainment for the visitors. This hotel also boasted the Wherrel Bi-Chloride Gold Institute, which offered treatments for those dependent on whiskey, opium, or tobacco. The resort brought continued business to Clinton until the springs dried up. It was rumored that someone had dropped bowling balls in it, causing it to stop its flow, however it is more likely the reservoir simply dried up. The hotel burnt, and with the introduction of Truman Lake in the 70’s, little remains of this once popular get-away today.
